Gas hits $3.89 in Eugene, John Stewart responds to Bush on $4.00 per gallon gas (w/video)

Last week, President Bush didn't know that analysts had predicted that gas prices could reach as high as $4.00 per gallon nation wide.

This week, gas prices for premium gas in Oregon topped out at $3.89 per gallon at stations in Eugene and Gold Beach.

The average price of standard gas in Oregon is now $3.41 per gallon, up more than $.45 in the last month, and $.70 in the last year.

Humane Society sues FDA over "downer cows"


The American Humane Society has filed a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration over a loophole in federal law that allowed beef from "downer cows" to enter the US food supply.

A downer cow is a cow that cannot walk. In some cases, this can be a symptom of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), the so-called mad cow disease, that can be fatal when transmitted to humans through the food supply.

McCain dismissive of criminal charges against campaign chair (video)

The presidential campaign of Arizona Senator John McCain, who has built much of his political career on reducing corruption in politics, has come under fire in recent weeks over the number of corporate lobbyists in positions of power in the campaign.

McCain received more bad news this week, when Congressman Rick Renzi refused to step down as his Arizona campaign chair after being indicted for federal criminal charges of extortion, wire fraud, and money laundering in connection with land deals that were being considered in a congressional committee that Renzi chaired.

What follows is a YouTube video in which McCain says, the charges against Renzi "don't matter".

The cost of immigration reform

Last week, more than 100 people testified against new rules that are intended to prevent undocumented workers from obtaining driver's licenses in Oregon. This video is the testimony of one woman who testified. More than 4,000 supporters of immigrant rights protested outside of the capitol while the hearing was in session.
