Nancy Nord, head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission discusses her agency's role with Massachussetts Congressman, Edward Markey:
More than 30 million children's toys have been recalled during the past year due to lead in the surface paint. Lead, which can take decades to metabolize, has been linked to a host of physical and neurological ailments in children.
The CPSC, the federal agency responsible for testing all consumer toys in the United States currently has two technicians tasked with testing toys.
That's plenty, says Nancy Nord, former executive director of the American Corporate Counsel Association, who now heads the CPSC.
Nord has gone on record in opposition to a bill that would double her agency's funding and increase its oversight over consumer products. A former lobbyist for the chamber of Commerce, Nord also opposes legislation that would make companies accountable for knowingly selling defective or toxic products in domestic markets.
