Anti-immigrant legislation heads to Governor's desk

The Oregon House today voted 45-15 in favor Senate Bill 1080, which requires proof of citizenship in order to obtain an Oregon driver's license.

The vote on the bill was taken as more than 5000 people rallied outside of the capitol in opposition to the new requirements, which opponents say will result in more unlicensed, uninsured drivers on Oregon roads, creating a public safety hazard.

Supporters of the bill included Oregonians for Immigration reform, an organization whose web site describes immigration as "an attack on American sovereignty".

Governor Ted Kulongoski is expected to sign the bill into law within the next 2 days.
